Styles and Sizes
All of our coiled fabric pieces are made by hand here at 1840 Farm. Each fabric strip is torn by hand before being combined with other complimentary fabrics and then wrapped around a length of cording, joining the fabrics as we go. The fabric wrapped cord is then coiled and stitched together using a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine. I continue to wrap the coil and shape each item as it is stitched.
Each piece has its own unique color pattern and slight variation in shape. Because every piece is handmade, each one is a true original. Our handmade baskets display the raw edge of the fabrics used to create it. They are handmade in our non-smoking farmhouse.
I make our fabric items using the same technique my Great Grandmother used over 50 years ago. She lovingly transformed worn out clothing into useful household items that were used in their New England farmhouse. While her items were made purely for utility purposes, it is my goal to create beautiful handmade items that can serve a useful purpose in your home.
Each basket in our Collection comes with a hand signed product tag that includes the date that the basket was finished. Each basket is numbered and displayed in our photo gallery.
Our fabric items can be cleaned by spot cleaning or washing in the gentle cycle of your washing machine. Gently reshape baskets or trivets while still damp and allow to air dry. Overturning a damp basket on top of a bowl will ensure that it retains its shape while drying.
Trivets are not fire or flameproof. They are constructed of cording, fabric, and thread. They should not be placed in the microwave, oven, or directly over an open flame or hot burner. We find them to be an excellent buffer between a hot cooking pan and our kitchen counter. As they are made using natural materials, they will eventually conduct some heat, especially when used under extreme conditions. Care should be taken to ensure that they are not damaged and that the surfaces beneath them are adequately protected.

Nesting Baskets feature a round shape and straight sides. They nest inside each other when not in use. They are made in standard and shallow heights for each size. They do not have handles.

Storage Baskets feature a round shape and straight sides. They were designed after many requests from customers for a basket that could be used to hold paper plates on the kitchen counter or table. Of course, they have many other uses. They can also be made to order to fit your specific storage need. They do not have handles.

Farmhouse Trug Baskets feature an oblong shape and gently sloping sides. They have two handles and can easily be held by grasping both handles together. They were designed to corral supplies for your knitting, crochet, embroidery, or other hand crafting projects.

Market Tote Baskets feature an oblong shape and gently sloping sides. They have two handles and can be finished with your choice of handle type. The shorter handle is perfect for grasping together in hand or carrying over your wrist. The longer handle can be carried over the shoulder.

Easter Baskets feature a traditional Easter basket’s oblong shape and gently sloping sides. They have long handles that have been stitched together so that they will come to rest above the basket and be easy for little hands to carry.

Coasters and Trivets
Our handmade coasters and trivets feature a round shape. They are perfectly suited for placing under mugs, teapots, houseplants, or warm dishes. They add color and texture to any room. They are made using cotton cording, fabric, and thread. They should not be used in extreme conditions and are not fireproof.
Coasters are made in sets of two or four. They can be made with or without a saucer shaped caddy to hold them when not in use.

Saucer Style Trivets provide a spot to place a bottle of wine, a teapot, houseplant, or your car keys at the end of the day. I use them as a place to deposit fresh eggs when I bring them into the farmhouse or to set out butter and eggs to warm up to room temperature before baking.

Traditional Flat Trivets provide a similar spot to place a bottle of wine, a teapot, houseplant, or your favorite coffee mug. I use them throughout the farmhouse to protect surfaces and add a bit of color and texture to their space.
